Veteran fluke angler Dennis O'Brien of South Bound Brook watched his daughter Danielle hook the boat's largest fluke of the season just a couple of minutes into the first drift with a 13. Danielle's fluke was the first doormat by a female on Elaine B. II, and just barely behind the second largest ever on that boat which is her father's at just one ounce more.

The Mako Mania field was diminished to 113 boats due to the initial one week postponement and uncertainty about the offshore weather, but there was decent fishing as Capt. Pete Grimbilis of the GPPCBA said 18 makos were weighed while others were released or not weighed in since they were short of the sixth place leader on the board. Capt. Lou Grazioso joined the crew on Michele Ann for the 118-mile run to Wilmington Canyon on Sunday, when there was non-stop trolling action with 30-to-40-pound yellowfin tuna from 6-to-8 a. m. Though local sharking was decent over the weekend, there was an exceptional 730-pound mako boated by Thor III at the 31st annual Star Island Shark Tournament in Montauk that had 133 boats competing for almost a half-million dollars.

The others couldn't interest those blues with metal, but Tony Martino of Ocean Township released a 26-inch striper that hit his metal jig in the wash -- and Dan Brodzinski of Tin Man Tackle used his metal tipped with a Gulp Swimming Mullet for a short fluke and a sun dial. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills nailed a 28-inch striper on a Chug Bug shortly after he started casting in Shark River this morning, and added two smaller ones later on a Zoom jig.

Capt. Bud McArthur, of Splinter from Brick, checked out some local spots near Manasquan Inlet for fluke, but never found any -- possibly due to a water temperature down to 56 degrees at Sea Girt Reef, likely the result of the south winds. Water temperature was no problem at Monster Ledge, where it was 66 degrees and the south wind provided a good drift for Mark Roy on his Release Me along with his girl friend Yaping Jiang plus Jeff Sobin, both of Warren, and your reporter.

Frank Dee was sweating it out at Crystal Point Marina in Point Pleasant as makos kept going up on the scales, but he really didn't have much to worry about as the 301-pounder his Lockout from Brielle brought in Saturday wasn't challenged for the lead in Mako Mania.

The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant got into 2-to-3-pound blues jigging on Saturday -- plus their first black drum in years. Magic hours trips the last two nights produced a few stripers.

Sixty boats sailed offshore into a slightly bumpy swell, but no wind this morning as the Greater Point Pleasant Charter Boat Association's Mako Mania got underway. McArthur saw a couple of other stripers caught in that area, but the south wind seemed to shut off the bite -- and also made it almost impossible to hold bottom for fluke.

Bob Correll of Bay Head had been frustrated by two previous evenings without a hit despite being able to snag plenty of bunkers for bait, but that changed Thursday evening when Capt. Joe Massa of My III Sons at Morgan Marina and I joined him aboard his Boston Whaler out of Manasquan Inlet. Capt. Ron Santee Sr. was aboard today to limit up to a 9 1 16-pounder that wasn't even the largest of the day as Jim Gebhardt boated a 9 3 8-pounder.
